Article abstract: Introduction & Objective: Hemorrhoids are a common cause of perianal complaints. The aim of this study was to compare Ferguson hemorrhoidectomy and hemorrhoidectomy with ligasure.
Materials & Methods: Sixty eight patients with symptomatic grade II, grade III and IV hemorrhoids were randomly allocated to undergo either Ferguson hemorrhoidectomy (34patients)or hemorrhoidectomy with Ligasure (34patients).The patients were compared for the difference between techniques in operative time, postoperative pain incontinence, urinary retention, bleeding, local infection, anal stenosis, and time of hospitalization.
Results: The patients were matched with respect to age, gender, and chief complaints. At discharge time, there was no statistically significant differences in the frequency of postoperative complications like pain and urinary incontinence between the two groups except for postoperative pain which was more frequent in the group A. Operative time in group B was shorter than group A, and this difference was significant statistically. There were no significant differences between other complications at discharge time, one week and one month after the operation.
Conclusions: We recommend hemorrhoidectomy with ligasure for patients with symptomatic grade II, Grade III and IV hemorrhoids in comparison with ferguson hemorrhoidectomy.
